Day 17
1 Peter 5:5-7 reveals humility as a necessary heart attitude in approaching God: "'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.' Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."
It seems, then, that humility enables us to gain a glimpse of our true state in the universe - our smallness in light of God's greatness. Humility makes it possible for us to admit our need so that God can lift us up.
Yet we live in a culture that emphasizes personal strength and self-reliance. That creates some problems. As Philip observes, "In a paradox that I keep forgetting, God needs my confessed weakness far more than my strength. By trying to be strong, I may even block God's power."
Take a few minutes to meditate and think about the challenges you must overcome in order to humble yourself before God and keep company with him.
