Playground in Privetnoe!

Slava Bogu!! This is how one says Praise the Lord in Russian!

Today was amazing! Actually everyday has been amazing!

Today and yesterday we have been serving in the village of Privetnoe. It is a small but beautiful village in the countryside.

Yesterday we spent the day painting the outside of the church and preparing the grounds for the playground installation. The church building used to be abandoned and because of that people would dump their garbage. We literally dug up garbage for hours. There was a lot of glass that we had to get rid of.

The playground (which you generously purchased!!!) arrived early in the morning and before we got there the Pastor and his brother had already assembled it. They had been praying for a long time for a playground because their town had none. Now the only playground in the town sits on the church grounds!!! Praise God!!

We spent hours today digging holes and cementing the playground into the ground. As we installed it, it was amazing to see kids gathering around in anticipation. We then took some kids to a nearby lake and some brave members of our team jumped in.

At 5pm we started our festival inside the church. We performed a few skits and then the mayor of the city came to open the playground. This is pretty amazing because he is a Muslim and knows that the church is Christian. He cut the ribbon and even came back to give the team gifts of an Ukrainian flag & peaches! We then went back inside and gave our Canadian presentation then Andy preached and kids responded to the salvation call. Praise God!!!!!

So much more to tell but this laptop is dying!

Please pray for us tomorrow as we leave Sudak to minister in Belegorsk. This is where we'll spend the rest of our time serving. We're all feeling healthy, just need energy to serve as effectively as we already have! God is good!!!!!

God is on the move!

Hello again from Crimea!

Wow, the past two days have been a whirlwind! It feels as if we've been here for weeks. God is definitely on the move here.

On Sunday we went to the mother Church in Sudak. This is the church that has been persecuted recently (they were forced out of the building they had been renting). They held church in the Pastor Gregory's front lawn. It was beautiful. 150 people sat under grape vines on chairs, crates, boxes, whatever could be found. (Normally they have about 100.) As Andy preached it started pouring rain but that didn't stop the passion! People listened to the word with a deep hunger.

It was absolutely amazing. God is strengthening the church!

That evening the pastors of the Belegorsk church (the church we'll be visiting on Friday) invited us to their home. We gathered outside around a table full of Ukrainian pastries, chocolate (SO GOOD), & tea. We all shared our testimonies. It was so encouraging to hear the stories of the people. The Lord shines so brightly through them.

Today we visited a little village in the mountains. Again, we shared our stories. Everyone is so encouraged by how young we are and are so curious to when we had that moment when Christ was revealed to us. We then gathered outside and prayed and worshipped for over an hour believing God for that village. They want to church plant there but only have a home group so far. (can't remember the name of the village but will let you know when I find out!)

Please continue to pray for the people of Crimea, for the church of Sudak and surrounding churches. God is up to some marvellous things here!

Hello from Sudak, Crimea!!!

well we arrived in crimea! (for some reason i can't use capitals!)

we travelled a loooooong time. 8hr flight to london, night layover, up at 4am for flight to ukraine, 6 hr layover in very hot + humid kiev, then a short flight to crimea! we're currently in sudak. it's where the mother church is that we're serving.

pastor gregory is awesome! everyone here has been so hospitable. we are so blessed. today we went to a little village called lesnoa. we played with kids (they beat us at soccer!), laughed, talked, did some skits and a canadian presentation. tomorrow we will go back and focus on evangelism. in most towns we go to we have two days to minister, the first is to do a canadian presentation and build relationships. the second day is to do evangelism!

tomorrow we go to the church in sudak. please pray for this mother church as they were kicked out of their building by the mayor (he is orthodox and is persecuting all the evangelistic churches) we'll most likely meet in someone's backyard. pray for the lord to give them vision and direction in this time of oppression.

please also pray for the village of lesnoa! we are believing for many salvations!

the team is all doing well and has recovered from jet lag! praise god!

Team Crimea leaves today and would love your prayers! The 12 (Pastor Andy, Hannah, Jonathan, Laura, Jared, Gareth, Ash, Greg, Julie, Britt, Alex & Richard) of them are flying out at 4pm! They'll be having a night lay-over in London on Thursday and will be arriving in Crimea late Friday night.
They'll be serving in local Church plants, doing vbs, building two playgrounds and much more.
Please surround this trip and team with your prayers. They sure appreciate them!

CRIMEA- MEETING SUNDAY

As most of you probably know Pastor Andy is taking a team to Crimea late June to early July. The team will be the first of three teams dedicated to planting a new church in the city of Belagorsk, visiting local schools, working with children and the community to establish a new work for God in this spiritually desperate part of Europe.

We will be having an information meeting, Sunday at 5:30pm in the Prayer Room.
You can pick up an applicationg form at that meeting. Application forms are due Sunday, March 27th.

Also throughout Lent we are SO excited to start praying at 6:15 Thursday mornings in the Sanctuary. We'll be gathering with some prayer warriors who have been praying in that time slot for years.

We are excited, Very excited, so excited to announce that Adore is LIVE STREAMING. That's right folks, you can now view Adore from your home. Obviously, nothing is as good as the real thing, but if you are sick or away or unable to get yourself to church, you can view from your home computer! Now your parents who live in cowtown, Alberta can see the church you go to! The service will run live at 6:30pm pacific time and immediately after at 8pm pacific time.

VALENTINE'S DAY BLESSING c/o DREAM WOMEN

On January 15th, Dream Women (Women of Adore & GT) gathered together for a night full of testimonies, cookies, laughter & friendship. The Cridge Centre for the Family came and shared about their Womens' transitional safe house. It's a safe home provided for women who are leaving dangerous situations. Many of these women leave very quickly, not having time to pack certain necessaties.

Dream women raised over $700 at Build, which blessed each woman (17 altogether) with a lovely, Valentines Basket. Check out the lovely photos below.

21 Day Challenge- Final Weekend Edition

I am lying in bed this morning just thinking about how good God has been over the last three weeks. From the very beginning of our season of prayer and fasting, faith just started to rise in our hearts and our expectation was so evident...we wanted to see God move!

As we enter this final weekend, I would like it to be a weekend of testimony.

Look back over these three weeks and share with us the moments where God showed up for you.
It could be a word of clear direction, a new passion for life or ministry, an act of divine healing, a miracle in your marriage or your family, what about the evidence of a growing spiritual hunger in those around you?
Let's be sure to identify and testify to God's goodness so that He may receive the glory for what only He could have done.

I have already heard many stories- let me share one that came to me just yesterday..

"I just wanted to give you some amazing updates! I had an appointment with my surgeon the other day, and was scheduled to have surgery the following day. While doing the pre-operation tests it was discovered that the tumors in both my ovaries had completely vanished and there was no residue or sign of them previously being there. I've had that test 2 weeks before and a few times before then also and seen the monitor screen myself of seeing them and their progress, so it was no mistake that they in fact were very much there.
My doctor said it was humanly impossible for the body to clear that out in that little amount of time and not show any residual reminiscence of the tumors and that he's never seen that before. I had been giving extra attention in prayer to that area because I was trying to avoid that particular surgery. ..all I can really say is Praise God! and thank everyone who has been praying for me."

Isn't that an incredible story of answered prayer?

21 Day Challenge- Day 19

The Fasted Life...

I believe that the journey that we have been on has been about seeking God, seeing him more clearly, aligning our living with his will, and pursuing God's Kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven. What I believe happens in the process is that we begin to see a new way. A new way of living, thinking and acting. I would hope that as we come into the final days of our 21 day challenge, that you would see clearly the fruit of living differently and as a result, commit to continue living what I call "The Fasted Life."

What I mean is that you will have the opportunity now to be released from all forms of committed discipline. The challenge is over- and I would assume that for many of us there is a sense of relief attached to that. But is it possible that God may want you to continue living a life of devotion and discipline throughout the remainder of this year...and into the future?

In my journey to live the fasted life, it seems that God always brings me back to a place of total life surrender. He continually asks me to release the thing I think I want in order to receive the things I truly need. It has been an amazing journey into appreciation for the simple, a peace about each breath, and a faith that does really believe that God is the one who truly will take care of me.

My encouragement for you is that you would throw yourself upon the divine. Allow God to take control of every breath, give up the right to be in the drivers seat, and submit every meal, every day of work, every experience of joy and pain unto him. As you do this, God's voice will rise to the surface, you will hear him speak, he will ask you for things, he will call you away to be with him, he will open doors that you can confidently walk through, and he will give you more and more as you prove to be faithful in the little things.

The fasted life begins with prayers like the one I pray every morning.

"Lord, here are my hands- use them for your glory, here are my feet- lead in your appointed path, here are my eyes- may they see as you would see, here is my mind- be the Lord of my thinking, here are my lips Lord- may they form words that will encourage, edify, and bring the wisdom of heaven down. Use me Lord, I am yours today."

21 Day Challenge- Day 18

Day 18-

I woke up today with Matthew 11:28-30 in my head and heart. How appropriate that as I rested through the night, the Lord was speaking rest over me.

Matthew 11:28-30 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

Work. Family. School. Church. Marriage. Sports. Kids. Assignments. Phone calls. Exams. Emails. Birthdays. Projects. Facebook. Weddings. Grandkids. Twitter. Funerals...and the list goes on.

Life at times can seem very full, almost overwhelmingly full. Now don't get me wrong, life is meant to be full. Jesus even said it Himself in John 10:10 "...I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." If our Lord said that we are meant to have a full life, then we sure are meant to have a full life. But our Lord who tells us to have a full life, also tells us to rest.

Resting in the Lord enables us to live a full life. I love how David makes this clear in Psalm 23 "The LORD is my shepherd, I lack nothing. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he refreshes my soul."

Fasting leads us to rest. The other day my friend was sharing what God is teaching her throughout the 21 Day Challenge. She began sharing how He is teaching her about rest. Because she is denying her body food, her strength must come from resting in God. How amazing it is that through this fast, when our bodies are weak, we have to rely on God's strength. Through this weakness we can receive an even deeper understanding of 2 Corinthians 12:8-10 "“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. 10 That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong."

Take some time out of your busy day to rest in the Lord. Admit your weakness to Him so His power can be made perfect. Allow His Word to refresh your soul.

21 Day Challenge- Day 17

Day 17

1 Peter 5:5-7 reveals humility as a necessary heart attitude in approaching God: "'God opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble and oppressed.' Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you."

It seems, then, that humility enables us to gain a glimpse of our true state in the universe - our smallness in light of God's greatness. Humility makes it possible for us to admit our need so that God can lift us up.

Yet we live in a culture that emphasizes personal strength and self-reliance. That creates some problems. As Philip observes, "In a paradox that I keep forgetting, God needs my confessed weakness far more than my strength. By trying to be strong, I may even block God's power."

Take a few minutes to meditate and think about the challenges you must overcome in order to humble yourself before God and keep company with him.

21 Day Challenge- Day 16

"I determined to learn to pray so that my experience conformed to the words of Jesus rather than try to make his words conform to my impoverished experience."- Richard Foster

If you are anything like me, you have had those small but significant moments where prayer seemed to be vital and fulfilling. You wake with an anticipation and a desire to be with the Father. Then there are the other times... when things don't feel quite as inspired, where prayer seems to be a looming task rather than a secret getaway. I have explored this pattern in my own life and the conclusion that I have come to is this...prayer works. Whether I feel it or not, if I am "in the mood" or not, if I come with the knowledge of Christ's rule and supremacy over my life, then I can be sure that prayer works.

Prayer works because God doesn't lie and he said "seek me and you will find me" and "if you ask in my name (Jesus) you can have what you ask for."

Prayer works because this is God's world and He said "if you humble yourself and pray...I will hear from heaven, I will forgive your sin, and I will heal your land."

Prayer works because prayer is the way we do battle Paul said "we demolish strongholds and every argument that sets itself up against the knowledge of Christ" and "our battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual wickedness in high places"

Prayer works because it centres us on God and his promises David wrote "Praise be to God who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!"

So let me encourage you my friends, regardless of how you feel today, regardless of what side of the bed you got up on, regardless of the challenge you face, and regardless of what suffering you are enduring... prayer works!"

"I call on you, O God, for you will answer me; give ear to me and hear my prayer." Psalm 17:6

2 Corinthians 1:3-5 Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God. 5 For just as we share abundantly in the sufferings of Christ, so also our comfort abounds through Christ.

Food is a source of comfort for many. Reflect on how much your thoughts have been overtaken with craving certian foods, missing the things you're fasting from, or even how much weight you could lose. Is it often? If it were alcohol or a harmful drug, would you consider yourself addicted if you were this consumed with your desire for them? For many, this fast can begin an awareness of a harmful place food may have in your life. It can reveal an addiction. Pray that the God of compassion and all comfort will become your primary source of comfort. Ask him to use this experience with suffering to remove anything in your life that has taken the Holy Spirit's place as your Comforter.

Day 13-

This weekend I want to encourage your continued journey in praying scripture into your loved ones, co-workers/fellow students, your church, your city, and country. Over the weekend, meditate on John 17. In it Jesus prays for himself, his disciples, and for you! Read it and see if it doesn't give you some prayer fuel! Try reading it at www.youversion.com so you can read different translation and hear how Jesus poured out his heart to God for our benefit.

Here are a very of my favourite verses from the chapter...

³ Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

¹¹ I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name, the name you gave me, so that they may be one as we are one.

¹⁵ My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

²⁰ My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, ²¹ that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me

I think the things that Jesus prayed, are things that we should pray for too. Remember- "Your Kingdom come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven."

21 Day Challenge- Day 12

Day 12

Yesterday I came into the living room to see Lisa's Bible open to the first chapter of Ephesians. I gotta tell you, there is nothing that brings more joy to my heart than to have a wife who seeks God. It makes a huge difference in any family to have a praying, studying, woman of God in the home.

Whenever I flip through the pages of the Bible and run across Ephesians I have to pause and read the first chapter. In this passage we get a glimpse into the intersession of the apostle Paul. He was so consumed with love, so motivated by compassion and care that even when he writes...prayer just comes out.

Wow, what a concept! Can you imagine if this were true of you and me? What if no matter what we were doing, prayer would jump out of us for those around us and the needs we are aware of?

I believe the more Christ captures our hearts, the more we allow him to dominate our thoughts and our time, the more this WILL happen!

Even now many of you are feeling motivated towards the things of God in ways you haven't been motivated in years- or maybe never before! This is the work of the Spirit.

As you commune with your maker, he becomes a greater focus in your life and through your season of greater dedication, the mind of Christ begins to naturally replace the mind of the sinful nature.

What an amazing journey you are on!

In this season it will become most natural for you to allow the spontaneity of spiritual prayers to emerge. One way that you can develop this in your life is to begin to pray the prayers of scripture. To rehearse the words of other great men and women who felt as passionate about the things of God as you do right now. Allow me to set you on your way with this first prayer of the apostle Paul in Ephesians chapter one.

As you read it, begin to meditate on the ways that this prayer can be applied in your life and in the life of your loved ones. Then allow the spirit to guide you into ways you can pray this passage into your associates at work or school, into your church family, into your city and country. May this be the beginning of many Spirit inspired prayer moments and...I would love to hear your stories of where prayer begins to jump out of you!

Eph 1:17-19a

¹⁷ I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. ¹⁸ I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people,¹⁹ and his incomparably great power for us who believe.

21 Day Challenge- Day 11

Well, I mentioned yesterday that I would like to share a couple of stories of prayer results with you today.

First off, I would like to share that the general tone in both the office all week and in the services on Sunday were incredibly positive and spiritually expectant!

During our Sunday am prayer time, we had so many people come forward for special prayer, that we had to expand the time normally allotted. I think this speaks of the greater awareness of our need for God and an increased ability to believe God for changes.

Don Allen spoke to two people on Sunday who told him that they used to come here when they were children but haven't been here in 20+ years. Both of them said that they woke up Sunday morning feeling like God was drawing them back. So these two separate people were feeling drawn by God's spirit to be in church this past Sunday and they were here!

God is also drawing the hurting to us to be loved and cared for. Two young men made it known that they had been left by their wives and they felt drawn to come and find support here at GT and Adore.

I prayed with a young man who came weeping to the front of the church looking for me specifically. He said that he called me that morning because he was at a very desperate place in his life. He was going to take his life. Through prayer and counseling, he has made the decision to join our celebrate recovery ministry this Friday. Please pray that he makes it there tomorrow night.

As we pray, things in the heavenlies get stirred up!

I spoke to two other young men on Sunday who were asking questions about demonic activity in their lives. I assured them that the way to peace is through Jesus Christ and I asked them to consider the truth that Jesus is the only way to freedom. These two young men left to ponder what I had said to them. Let's pray that they will return this Sunday to receive the freedom they need.

This Sunday morning, Pastor Don will be sharing a story about the healing of a woman in the hospital as he prayed for her. It is another faith building story that you won't want to miss!I hope that these stories encourage you to continue to persevere in prayer. WE ARE SEEING REULTS!

Day 10 -21 Day Challenge

By noon today we will reach the half way mark of our journey of fasting and prayer.

I am reminded of my 2007 marathon experience- it was my first and to this point, my last. I remember the joy and excitement that I experienced in reaching the halfway mark. As my partner and I neared the line, we checked our watches and realized that we were right on track for our desired finish time.

The second half was full of more hills to climb, fatigue, painful legs, and rain. Yet there was something about crossing that halfway mark that gave us such fuel to press on through the most difficult parts of the race.

I think it was the realization that we were closer to the finish line by moving forward than by going backwards. Every step moved me deeper into the idea that “the best way to finish, is just to keep on going!”

And so here we are in our 21 Day Challenge, coming up to the crest of the hill, with more behind us than in front of us. A growing sense of satisfaction deep in our hearts, and an ability to reflect on what God has done.

Yet we know we must keep on moving forward!

Philippians 3:12-15a

12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.
15 All of us who are mature should take such a view of things.

The truth is, just like Paul said… we are not finished yet. Maturity calls us to press on- that we might complete what we have started. Forget the difficulty and struggle of yesterday. Commit again today to finish strong.

As I came through the second half of the marathon, I was so encouraged by the cheers of people standing by on the side lines. My name was on my number and so people standing on the sidewalks began to encourage me by name. “Good job Andy!” “Keep going” “You’re almost there!”

My favorite on was… “You look strong Andy!”- that was a bit of a stretch, I am sure I look like I was about to die! It was so encouraging out there to know I wasn’t alone- and people were with me.

Today hear your fellow warrior encouraging you… “Keep going, good job, you’re almost there!”

And even better, the Lord is pleased, he is moving and tomorrow I will share a few stories about how God is responding to your prayers.

Here are some helpful thoughts when fasting:

DON’T SLIP into the PITS!

1. Pit of Comparison: Everyone is not doing the same time, type, or amount of fasting – but all are trying to be obedient and seeking the same God! Focus on loving God more!

2. Pit of Condemnation: Don’t waste time wallowing in your mistakes – get back up and get going again! Remember your fasting is not paying for breakthrough, growth, and good gifts from God; it is paving the way for breakthrough, growth, and good gifts from God! Don’t let the devil knock you out of the race because you stumbled. We all stumble. The Blood of Christ covered our stumbling so we could continue on and win in the end. Focus on following hard after God.

3. Pit of Pity: Remember it is not about you. Don’t focus on what you are deprived of, focus on loving God more – on knowing Him better. Delight in Him and He will rearrange your desires! (Ps. 34) "Draw near to Him and He (your Creator, Savior, Lord, Master, Healer, Friend, your treasure, joy, and source of wisdom…) will draw near to you!" (James 4:8) "Thank God you are not deprived – you are satisfied!" Focus on pressing in for more of God.

4. Pit of Grumpiness: When your flesh is denied something it's used to getting, it often gets hard to live with, so aim your attitude UP with thanksgiving. “For the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.” (Rom. 14:17) In other words, it’s not all about feeding our flesh and feeling good, but about living in Christ, for God, with others! Focus on loving and serving others.

5. Pit of Pointlessness: The place of forgetting what and why you’re doing this. It is easy to slip into this pit if your schedule is super full. You become so busy you get distracted from feeding on the Word, you don’t stop to pray, and you neglect your opportunities to fellowship at church services. The antidote is Matt. 6:33, “seek first the kingdom of God and…” On a busy day, put a Bible CD in the car to listen to as you travel or clean the house for company. Have your scriptures you want to pray written down on cards or a journal to easily look to and help you aim your prayers. Focus on taking time to seek God FIRST.

Day 8

“You have made us for yourself, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in you.”- St. Augustine

Any individual who is totally open to God and responds to life with fasting can discover the life-giving presence of God- sometimes this experience can be so rich, that it becomes almost palpable. Adam and Eve lived in Gods presence in Eden but were banished.

The Bible is telling us that humans were designed to enjoy intimacy with God but our self-will alienates us from his presence. Yet, deep inside the soul of every man is a cup that knows and yearns for the desired drink of God’s presence.

“You stir us up to take delight in your praise”- St. Augustine

We all yearn for God, and yet it is God at work in each of us that creates that yearning. As we begin the 8th day of our 21 Day Challenge, allow your growing desire to be in God’s presence be fed by a deepening devotion. Draw away with Jesus today and feel the passion that is expanding within you, drink deep of his love, and feed on the bread of life. This will satisfy your soul like nothing else can.

This weekend you may face different challenges than you have during your normal weekday activities. The desire to cheat may be very strong this weekend. Let me encourage you to meditate upon the words of Jesus as he realigns prayer and fasting for us.

Matthew 6:5-

5 “And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.

9 “This, then, is how you should pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

10 your kingdom come,

your will be done,

on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily bread.

12 And forgive us our debts,

as we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.’

14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.

16 “When you fast, do not look somber as the hypocrites do, for they disfigure their faces to show others they are fasting. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face, 18 so that it will not be obvious to others that you are fasting, but only to your Father, who is unseen; and your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.

You live in the abundant grace and love of Jesus! You are free to have victory over every area of struggle and difficulty! Rejoice this weekend in the joy of your journey with him.

One final encouragement... often we will see the benefit of a corporate time of prayer and fasting when we join together for worship. Come this Sunday expecting to see the Holy Spirit at work and to experience a new freedom in worship. It’s gonna be a great weekend!

21 Day Challenge- Day 5

Day 5-

In the middle of the Old Testament is a collection of Israel’s favourite prayers. Through these Psalms, we learn that prayer has man companions- like prayer and kneeling, prayer and pleading, prayer and pondering, prayer and struggling, prayer and praising.

One of prayer's companions is fasting. Here are four lines from the middle of the thirty fifth psalm. David tells us all that when his enemies were “sick,” he didn’t gloat. Instead, he got to work praying for them:

But as for me, when they were sick,

I wore sackcloth;

I afflicted myself with fasting.

I prayed with head bowed on my bosom,

As though I grieved for a friend or a brother;

I went about as one who laments for a mother,

Bowed down and in mourning.

Psalm 35:13-14

In this psalm, David is not being overly dramatic or trying to get us to see how righteous he was or how wicked his enemies are. He was simply pointing the way- our prayers are to be accompanied by fasting.

For David, prayer was a whole body activity- and so it is for us.

Join with King David and the other writers of the Bible as you pray and kneel, pray and plead, pray and ponder, pray and struggle, pray and praise, and pray with fasting.

21 Day Challenge- Day 4

Ezra8:12-23

21 There, by the Ahava Canal, I proclaimed a fast, so that we might humble ourselves before our God and ask him for a safe journey for us and our children, with all our possessions. 22 I was ashamed to ask the king for soldiers and horsemen to protect us from enemies on the road, because we had told the king, “The gracious hand of our God is on everyone who looks to him, but his great anger is against all who forsake him.” 23 So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.

When the children of Israel had been in Babylon too long and were on the verge of returning to Israel under the leadership of Ezra, they fasted. They did this to plead with God for guidance and direction.

Ezra exercised incredible faith by refusing to allow the King to send soldiers with them to protect the exiles upon their return. The road was long and dangerous- yet Ezra sought the Lord for supernatural protection as they traveled... “and he answered our prayer.”

Fasting along with prayer is not some kind of a magic bullet to ensure the answer we want. Fasting doesn’t reinforce the crumbling walls of our faithless prayers, nor is it a manipulative tool. We fast because a condition arises that leads us to desire something deeply. We fast because our plea is so intense that in the midst of this desire, eating seems sacrilegious!

My encouragement to you today is to continue on in your prayer and fasting- God is listening. See the great needs of our church for healing, revival, and creative Holy Spirit generated outreach. See the needs of our city for the gospel to reach the people of Victoria, help for the hurting, and the needs of the poor. Be reminded today of your own personal need for renewal and the need to hear a fresh word from God. Let this need turn to desire and seek God with fervent prayer and fasting because it is the right response!

2 Chronicles 20:1-4
1 After this, the Moabites and Ammonites with some of the Meunites came to wage war against Jehoshaphat.
2 Some people came and told Jehoshaphat, “A vast army is coming against you from Edom, from the other side of the Dead Sea. It is already in Hazezon Tamar” (that is, En Gedi). 3 Alarmed, Jehoshaphat resolved to inquire of the LORD, and he proclaimed a fast for all Judah. 4 The people of Judah came together to seek help from the LORD; indeed, they came from every town in Judah to seek him.

When the challenges of life come against us, isn’t it so good to know that we have a place to turn?

I count it a tremendous privilege to be able to call on God in times of need. Like King Jehoshaphat, we are looking for the strong arm of the Lord to intervene in our current circumstances.

For some of you, there is a very specific and pressing concern on your heart. Maybe you or loved one are facing illness, financial crisis, addiction, or marriage and family issues that weigh heavy upon you today.

For others it maybe just the growing understanding of how in need you are of personal renewal in your own life. You are aware of the deep need in your own soul for a greater hunger and a deeper desire for the things of God.

Yet in all of this we are now looking to God, this is not within our grasp to change. It must be a supernatural intervention of the Lord. And so we fast and pray- believing that God will hear us and be compassionate toward us.

King Jehoshaphat said this so well later on in this same passage in the 2 Chronicles…

At the end of verse 12 Jehoshaphat proclaims in front of the great assembly gathered there that day… “We do not know what to do but our eyes are on you.”

Let this be the prayer of our hearts today…

“Our Father, in light of all you know and in light of all we don’t know, we choose to trust you. We make it our goal today to come to you in fasting and prayer and ask that we would be able to place our eyes upon you and watchfully trust in your power to transform and deliver.”

My fellow prayer warriors,

I am so excited about day two of our 21 day challenge. Already we are hearing reports from the more than 100 people who have signed up to embrace this season of sacrifice. Yet the truth is, we have just begun to scratch the surface of all that God has for us in prayer.
I want to encourage each one of you to embrace the change that the Holy Spirit will lead you through as you pray. Even today, allow the quiet internal voice of God speak to you about the life you live and the choices you make. This could truly be the most spiritually transforming 21 days you have ever experienced.

"To pray is to change. Prayer is the central avenue God uses to transform us. If we are unwilling to change then we will abandon prayer as a noticeable characteristic of our lives"- Richard Foster

Let me remind you of the importance of the unity of prayer and fasting. You may very well miss an opportunity for growth if you spend time in prayer and yet forget what Jesus said... “This kind can come out by nothing but prayer and fasting.” (Mark 9:29)

On the other hand...you may really feel prideful and boastful about your self discipline while fasting if you don't allow the humility of Jesus to settle upon you in prayer. Enjoy the unity and embrace the harmony of fasting and prayer.

James 4:2b-3- "...You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures."

As God transforms our passions, as he gives us a changed perspective, we will begin to ask with the right motives.

14 Declare a holy fast; call a sacred assembly. Summon the elders and all who live in the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.

Thanks to all who have committed to joining with us in this 21 Day Challenge. I believe that God is going to recapture our hearts, re-fire our souls, and renew our love for Him. I believe that even today, God will empower you to fulfill the commitment you have made to Him. I want to encourage you to lean upon the Lord, allow his spirit to energize you. Today as you fast and pray, be joyful because the mighty power of God is at work in you!

This group fast is a wonderful experience for all of us. As we come together to reach out toward God, he will be there to meet us at our point of need and give us the benefit of access to the Holy Spirit. Let me encourage you with this quote...

""The fast day was a glorious day, such as London has scarce seen since the Restoration. Every church in the city was more than full, and a solemn seriousness set on every face. Surely God heareth prayer, and there will yet be a lengthening of our tranquility." - John Wesley (February 6, 1756)

Merry Christmas Adore!

There is nothing like the season of Advent to help us focus on the things that are close to our hearts. I know for many of you family and home life is on your mind. For others it is a time of much needed rest…I am finding myself very reflective this season. I am reflecting upon the grace and abundant gifts of God to us as a community. What a season! We have seen tremendous growth, tremendous dedication, and tremendous life change. Thanks for all of you who have made Adore the special place that it is. Below this post you will find the intro to “Illuminate”- I hope that all of you had a chance to see our Christmas “Fusion of music and media.” I think it really summarizes the year of 2009. This has been a season of illumination- many regaining a bright and clear picture of what life with Jesus can look like. There has also been a sense of redefining our ideas of church, God continues to take us on a wild ride of soul searching and reengineering as he shines his light into our paradigms. I know that God will continue to lead us as we move forward into tomorrow.

So as we reflect on the season…I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who played a role in the Illuminate project. It was so great to have the input of so many talented people from the Adore community.
